From a Tree to a Community Health Center: The Story of Healthcare at Blair in Kenya
What began as a simple act of service under the shade of a tree has grown into a mission of lasting transformation. The story of healthcare at Blair in Kenya is a testament to what happens when we show up, listen, and grow alongside a community.
In 2012, something extraordinary happened in a small village in Kisumu County, Kenya. Under the shade of a tree in the front yard of Elly and Zilper’s home, the first medical clinic for the community was born. Led by Dr. Jane Ferry and a small group of volunteers, this clinic marked the first time many people in the village had ever seen a doctor.
It was simple. It was humble. And it was life-changing.
The Early Years: Care Where None Existed
From 2012 through 2019, volunteer medical teams returned annually, building trust and delivering care to a community with almost no access to healthcare. We saw up to 1,000 patients in a single week, treating everything from malaria and respiratory conditions to severe scalp infections that caused children significant discomfort and social stigma.
We saw transformation.
Year after year, the condition of children’s skin and scalps improved. Families began to understand prevention. Health education became just as powerful as the medications themselves.
At the same time, the team encountered serious medical conditions that required advanced care. When possible, funds were raised to help individuals access life-changing surgeries and higher-level treatment.
These clinics were not just about treating illness.
They were about restoring dignity, building knowledge, and creating hope. Over time, we saw a transformation: health education became just as powerful as the medicine itself.
When the World Stopped—The Work Continued
When COVID-19 halted international travel, the clinics could not continue in person. But the mission did not stop.
In December 2019, Blair in Kenya took a critical step forward by hiring a full-time Medical Assistant to run a school-based clinic. Even without international volunteers, care continued every day.
The clinic was consistently stocked with:
Malaria testing kits and treatment
Deworming medications
Wound care supplies
Treatments for common infections
Albuterol for children with asthma
This shift marked an important evolution—from short-term outreach to consistent, community-based care.
A Turning Point: Expanding the Vision
When volunteers returned in 2023, one thing became clear:
The need had grown—and so had the opportunity.
The school clinic was making a difference, but it was no longer enough.
Children needed more comprehensive care. Families in the surrounding community needed access to reliable healthcare. Preventative services, maternal care, and chronic disease management were essential next steps.
It was time to build something bigger.
Building the Future: A Level 2 Community Health Clinic
Today, we are taking the next bold step in this journey.
Blair in Kenya has:
Purchased land just up the road from the school
Drilled a clean water well to serve both the clinic and the surrounding community
Hired a full-time Licensed Community Health Nurse with midwifery training, beginning May 2026
This new site will become a Level 2 Community Health Clinic, aligned with the standards of the Kenya Ministry of Health.
What a Level 2 Clinic Means
A Level 2 clinic provides essential primary healthcare services within the community, including:
Outpatient care for common illnesses
Maternal and child health services
Preventative care and health education
Immunizations and growth monitoring
Basic laboratory testing
Management of chronic conditions like asthma
Most importantly, it creates a formal link to higher levels of care, ensuring patients who need advanced treatment can be referred appropriately and efficiently.
Designed for Sustainability and Impact
This clinic is not just a building—it is part of a long-term, sustainable healthcare system.
Our development plans include:
Reliable clean water access through the new well and storage system
Solar power infrastructure to ensure consistent electricity for care delivery
Medical supply systems to maintain essential medications and equipment
Partnerships with local hospitals and the Ministry of Health
Digital health records to track patient care, growth, and outcomes over time
We are intentionally building a model that is:
Locally led
Sustainable
Scalable for future growth
Why This Matters
For over a decade, we have seen what happens when healthcare becomes accessible:
Children stay healthier and attend school more consistently
Preventable conditions are treated early
Families gain knowledge and confidence in caring for their health
Lives are changed—not just in moments, but for generations
What began under a tree has grown into something far greater than we imagined.
But we are not finished.
