Blair Educational Centre is the first school established by the Blair in Kenya nonprofit and is located in Nyahera, Kisumu County, in western Kenya. The school opened in January 2013 and was designed to be a self-sustaining community hub providing education, health services, and community resources.

Today, the school serves over 400 students and employs approximately 40 staff members, making it an important educational and community center for the surrounding villages.

Location & Community

Blair Educational Centre is located in the North Kisumu Ward (Bar-B Sub-location) within the Kisumu West Sub-county, near Bar Union Secondary School on the road toward Thim Bonde Primary School. The school serves children from the surrounding rural communities where access to quality education can be limited.

Since opening in 2013, the school has become an important part of the community, providing education, meals, healthcare, and access to clean water.


Levels of Education

Blair Educational Centre provides a full range of early childhood, primary, and junior secondary education:

  • Playgroup / Nursery – Early childhood education

  • Primary School (Grades 1–6) – Kenyan national curriculum

  • Junior School (Grades 7–9) – Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) preparing students for secondary school

The school is highly regarded locally and has ranked among the top schools in the region on national exams, outperforming many local public schools.


Educational Programs & Facilities

Blair Educational Centre has developed modern facilities and programs to support student learning and development.

Facilities and programs include:

  • Science laboratory

  • Computer laboratory and digital learning programs

  • School library

  • Clarke-Hutchinson Hall for dining and student gatherings

  • Safe drinking water systems

  • Sports programs including basketball and netball

  • On-site courts that host regional tournaments

These programs help provide students with educational opportunities that are often not available in rural schools.


Health & Community Services

Blair Educational Centre also serves as a community health and public health resource.

The school campus includes:

  • An on-site health clinic providing nursing care for students

  • Annual medical check-ups provided by visiting American healthcare professionals

  • Community health education programs

  • Water purification system

  • Flush toilets and improved sanitation facilities

These services support both the students and the surrounding community.

Leadership & Community Partnership

Blair Educational Centre was developed by local leaders Elly and Zilper, who continue to manage the daily operations of the school and staff. The school operates through a partnership between the local community and the Blair in Kenya nonprofit, with the goal of providing education and health resources until the community becomes self-sustaining.
