Lucky — Saving More Than a Foot

Lucky’s story is a powerful reminder that while early intervention changes everything, access to skilled care—even after months of suffering—can still save a life, a limb, and a future.

A Hidden Struggle

In 2022, while walking along a village road, our team met Lucky. He was just seven years old, walking barefoot, when we noticed something was wrong. One of his feet was visibly deformed. When we stopped to speak with him, Lucky quietly shared that he had injured it over a year earlier while playing.

He had never received medical care. What began as a simple fracture had turned into something far more serious. Over time, the untreated injury became infected, and the infection spread deep into the bone, leaving part of it exposed. Despite the constant, grueling pain, Lucky continued to walk on it every single day.

A Life-Saving Choice

The day after we met him, Lucky came to our clinic. After managing his pain, an X-ray confirmed our fears: Lucky had a severely infected fracture with extensive bone involvement. Without immediate intervention, he risked losing his entire foot—or worse, the infection could have become life-threatening.

Working quickly, we coordinated care with an orthopedic surgeon in Kisumu. To save his life and preserve his ability to walk, a difficult decision had to be made: surgery to remove the infected tissue and a partial amputation of the front portion of his foot.

Running Toward the Future

Today, Lucky is an energetic, thriving 11-year-old. He runs, he plays, and he goes to school. During a recent visit, he sought out the medical team to say thank you. He didn't ask for more care or complain about his journey; he had only a humble wish for a wristwatch and a pair of school shoes. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we were able to give him both.

Lucky can walk today because someone was there to provide the care he needed. Our goal is to ensure no other child has to walk for a year on a broken bone.

Our Mission: Health and Hope for Kisumu

Blair in Kenya has spent over a decade educating more than 1,500 students. Now, we are moving beyond the classroom to ensure these children and their families have the medical safety net they deserve.

This summer, we are preparing to break ground on a new health clinic alongside the Blair Educational Centre in Kisumu. This facility will provide the early intervention that children like Lucky so desperately need, right in their own community.

We are raising $100,000 to build this center of healing.

Double Your Impact: Through June 18, 2026, your gift goes twice as far. A generous donor will match every donation, dollar-for-dollar, up to $40,000.
